Update: Condo Building & Backyard with Moon Garden

Take advantage of the warmer weather while it lasts and get your landscape installed before the ground freezes! This is always the time of year when many will ask if it’s too late to plant. My answer: Definitely not! In fact, there are a number of shrubs and flowers that bloom in the fall, as well as trees and other plants that have brilliant fall foliage.

With the warm temperatures and rainy weather we’ve had, the ground is soft and in great condition for planting. We can also get your garden ready for the spring next year so that once the warm weather comes around again, everything is in your garden, ready to bloom.

We always offer completely free estimates, so give us a call to schedule yours! Please don’t hesitate to call or email us with any questions. You can also check out a couple more of our installs from this past summer below.

Chicago Condo Front Yard & Parkway Landscaping

We designed and installed this front yard and parkway landscape for a condominium building in Chicago this past summer. We were able to provide them with a variety of trees, shrubs and perennial flowers that will grow and fill the space in more each year. The small black fence we installed adds style while also protecting the landscape from dogs in the neighborhood.

We also installed this front and backyard landscape for a client’s home in Chicago. Note the moon garden in the back, consisting of all white blooms that will appear as though they are glowing in the moonlight.

Front Yard Landscaping & Sitting Area in Chicago

It has been a busy summer! As I continue to gather pictures of everything we’ve done, here is a peek into a job we had last month. The client wanted to create a sitting area in their front yard with a variety of container gardens and blooming shrubs surrounding them. We were quite pleased with the results!

Note the two paved areas for chairs and a table on either side of the walkway that we had installed for them as well as the planters near the front gate and front door that we filled for them. Near the gate, we created a mirrored effect on either side of the walkway with the shrubs we planted. As they continue to grow every year, they will fill the space in more and more. The range of blooms, foliage and seasonal interest will provide this client with much to enjoy year round.

Recent Work: Small Budget Install, Front Garden Update, Porch Painting & Container Plantings

We’ve been pretty busy the past couple of months and are so thankful for the many clients we’ve had the opportunity to work with. We hope they enjoy their new gardens and maybe even give you a little inspiration if you’re looking for some.

First up is a small budget backyard landscape we installed in Chicago. We were able to clean the space up and bring new colors and textures to the area.

Another regular client in Chicago asked us to fill the containers for her window boxes and shady backyard deck space. We were able to bring a variety of colors and textures to both places.

Rooftop Deck & Containers in Chicago

In case you missed our post yesterday, we are now offering custom-built cedar raised beds, which are great for vegetable gardens or setting aside a space for a garden when you don’t have a lot of room.

Last month, we stained a rooftop deck and filled containers for a client in the Lakeside neighborhood of Chicago. Among these containers, were two cedar planters we had custom built and then filled with four tall Arborvitaes to provide him with natural beauty and some privacy as it is a shared deck.  We helped him choose a stain from Benjamin Moore’s solid stain Arborcoat selection and love the finished results!  The color really compliments his furniture well, and the tropical flowers in the tall containers add punches of color and beauty to the space, perfect for entertaining or enjoying a night out under the stars.

We filled the tall black planter with white flowers to act as a moon garden while they are enjoying the space at night. The white flowers will have a romantic glowing effect against the night sky.

Custom Cedar Raised Beds

Have you been itching to start a vegetable garden this summer or have another use for a raised bed in your garden? Contact us for quality, custom built cedar planters at a reasonable cost!

Why use a raised bed?

Raised beds are ideal for small spaces or areas where the soil quality is poor.

In colder climates, it is also easier to work the ground and get the soil ready after the winter.  This allows for better drainage and deep rooting, often producing a higher yield in vegetable gardens.

Covering your raised bed with a thick layer of mulch helps keep the moisture in, reducing the need for extra watering and helping your garden to thrive in potential summer droughts.

Why use cedar specifically?

Cedar contains natural oils that prevent rotting and make these raised beds more durable without the use of chemical treatment.  It is a more expensive wood but will also last longer than other woods.

Painting: Fireplace Stencil & Winter Container

We painted this fireplace stencil for a client this past winter to add a splash of color and interest to her already beautiful room. It’s amazing what a little color and effort can do to enhance a room or make a feature, such as a fireplace, stand out. Take a look at the before and after pictures of this job – the pictures speak for themselves!

Backyard Deck Containers in Chicago

We provided these Chicago clients with the privacy and color they desired for their backyard deck with a few choice container plants as pictured below.  The evergreens planted in the containers near the grill provide the privacy they desired along with the beauty and aroma of nature.  We also planted a hydrangea and some mums below for added color in the spring, summer and fall.

Front & Backyard Garden Designs in Chicago … Containers too!

It’s been a busy summer! A couple of weeks ago, we designed a front garden for this client in Chicago. We removed a couple of shrubs that weren’t doing well or had already died and replaced them with thriving new shrubs, appropriate for the light conditions in the yard. With time and care, the shrubs will continue to grow and fill in the space. The variety of color, texture and blooming seasons will give this space interest and beauty throughout the year.

After cleaning up the space in the back, we planted a few shrubs in front of their Limelight Hydrangea shrub and a few other plants to fill in the space even more.

We also filled planters on the front porch and back deck with a variety of flowers and plants, mostly suited for shady conditions. We even created a small planter for her children to grow some small edible plants.

From My Garden: Decorative Hanging Planters

I just love decorating my backyard with these colorful hanging planters. I use them to decorate my fence with extra pops of color, and have used them for clients to create standout decorative pieces, such as this one using a painted ladder and birdhouses. You can get some of your own on Etsy at Harley’s Painted Garden.

They are great for adding extra pops of color and personality to a space and definitely add a “fun factor” to any garden. I have always been a bit of a carefree spirit and these containers help express that, so I wanted to share them with you. Take a look and let me know what you think!
