With every signed painting contract, 4 Seasons offers free color consultations. But what exactly does a color consultation involve? How helpful would it be for me? If you’re wondering these same things, read on!
I always begin a color consultation by getting a feel for the client’s taste through their reactions to different colors. The key is finding out how they feel in and with different colors. I encourage my clients to go to museums, look at paintings and take note of which colors please them before we meet.
I also encourage my clients to look at their environment as art – an expression of themselves – and to explore what they feel in that space. How can color help them achieve happiness, balance and flow from room to room? Together, we explore different color possibilities and combinations.
I never have prejudice toward or against any color; it is all about the client’s preferences. I’ve found painting spaces completely white can be just as colorful as adding bold colors to the walls – once the furniture and décor have been brought into the room.
I also don’t play around with the paint swatches you can find at hardware/paint stores. They can be a good starting point, but it’s important to remember that colors look very different on a 2-by-2 inch square than on a large wall. The key is to see the color in the context – the size, shape and function – of the environment in which it will be used.
Personality can also be helpful in guiding a client towards a set of colors or hues that they would enjoy. Here are a couple of fun/interesting quizzes to get your brain churning:
I also make suggestions for accent colors that will compliment the color(s) you have chosen for your walls; these can sometimes give our clients a nice surprise!
This past winter, we painted the interior of a condo in the city and were very involved in helping the client choose the colors they selected for their space. Take a look at our Facebook album for more pictures from that job, and call or email me to schedule your free painting estimate!
